There is a YouTube video called “ladies and gentlemen Mr. Leonard Cohen“ it is an National Film Board documentary film on the early life of Leonard Cohen, and it is from 1965 (click on that, you’ll get a YouTube Video entitled, “Ladies and Gentleman, Mr Leonard Cohen”)

There is an interview (between minutes 8:00 and 10:00) with Cohen and a prominent journalist at the time, Pierre Burton.

There are questions asked, and Cohen answers are in the abstract language of poetry.

Afterwards, Cohen describes Burton’s reaction, “he kept wanting me to cut my con out, you know, is wrestling really fixed?”

These entries are the expressions of my heart.

You, who have ventured to look in on them, you most likely don’t know me, and that’s best. Poetry from my heart is about me, what arrives on the page, what YOU read, and the images and thoughts that invade your mind, those are about you. When what’s reached out from my heart to your heart touches a deep part of you, that is one man lifting up and upholding another, inspiring one another.

None of that gives you an inkling about Me, the physical person you’ll pass by on the street. This is me, walking down Vimy Road, musing on what I see going on in my heart.
