I needed to make up a credit to graduate from high school, so I ended up taking Home Ec for boys called “Bachelor Cooking”
The creative staff at my high school took the Home Economics class, which at that time was a 100% girls class – I guess I’m that old, girls and boys were differentiated – and so the only change was the name of it.
We learned to cook and bake!
But it was a grade 10 class, and I was in grade 12… therefore about 2 years older than the other guys in the class. It is very much like now when you get on my bus in the morning. I get up for work at 3:45 am, and you get up at 7:00 am. Then when you’re at the bus stop, at say 8:00 am, I’m wide awake and three steps ahead!
One day I had my good clothes on for going out after school. I didn’t want to get them messed up. All the teacher had was a bunch of frilly, girly aprons.
As I was putting it on over by our workspace, we were about 6 guys to a table, I immediately heard references to me being gay.
I replied quite calmly, “oh! Right, well, hey guys I’m able to wear an apron like this because I’m sure of my sexuality. But if you guys aren’t sure if you’re a boy, or a girl, then for now you should stick to your blues, blacks, and browns”
Seconds later as they all put on the frilliest aprons available, saying,
“I’m sure, I’m sure”
