Life Today, This Hour

I love this beautiful face. This video is where I got the screen shot from. There’s a book called 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus. Its a detailed account of what happened to the indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere, when the folks from the Eastern Hemisphere arrived. Its well worth the read. It helped me to understand the dignity, and truth about these original peoples. Its a more complete story about these people on whose land we all share. Another really great book with a window on how things were back then is “Roughing It In The Bush” by Susanna Moodie. They are mentioned as quiet hero’s in her life. The setting is in the early days of Canada. That’s why I love that picture up there, of the Blackfoot Indian, in all his glory. The dignity carved in his face. I wish with all my heart and soul that I could have known him, and spent time with him.

The Short Version

When I write it’s “thinking out loud. So below is that process. I’m back at the top here, because I hate having to chase after a dangling carrot! I want to treat you, my reader the way I would like to be treated, the Golden Rule.

I explore what I called “the lie” and here is The Truth: Success is here and now, not tomorrow, and not an event that was missed in the past. Success is entering into his rest, and dwelling there.

Long Version

I’m 62 years old, and looking over what’s gone right, and what’s gone wrong in my life. And I’ve seen shadows of the lies that I slip under the power of whenever I am discouraged. A big one is that some regrettable thing in the past led me on a missed destiny, a missed calling. This is hard to shake. The “What if ?” Could drive me crazy.

Somewhere in the constant rehash of harsh history… there’s handwashing and there’s a lie that I’m believing, and therefore it’s running my life!

I hear Paul’s words,

For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ…

2 Corinthians 10:4-5

I’ve been meditating on this for the past couple of days now. It all started with feeling the pain of being written off by one of my children. Their life is F’d and is all my fault. Like I just said, I’m 62. He, however, is 34. I haven’t lived with him since his mom and I split up when he was 6. I’ve had less and less involvement in his life as the years have gone by, so to blame me for it all is at best excessive. At what point in his life will he quit blaming, quit being a victim? But, then again, why stop there. Why not blame God himself for giving him the mother and father that he did. But we need to be careful when we talk about blaming God. That sounds like grumbling and complaining. It sounds like shaking my fist at God, asking him, “How dare you!?!?” See below for how that worked out for the Israelites during their trip from Egypt to the promised land.

And as long as we’re in an analogy here. Egypt was where God took Jacob and his sons to look after them during the 7 years of famine. The story of Joseph and his brothers can be found <here> It was all God’s doing. Then years past, and Israel was doing so well in Egypt that the new Pharaoh, who never knew anything about Joseph, grew worried…

Then a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt. “Look,” he said to his people, “the Israelites have become far too numerous for us. Come, we must deal shrewdly with them or they will become even more numerous and, if war breaks out, will join our enemies, fight against us and leave the country.” Exodus 1:8-10

They began to oppress the Israelites. As the story unfolds, God reveals that he has raised up Pharaoh and Egypt, in order to glorify himself, the rest of the world, and especially to his people, the children of Israel.

So, they’re oppressed, and Egypt’s Pharaoh is truly THE BIG GUY in their world. They cried out to God, it says, and he sent Moses to deliver them. Moses is a type of Christ. I’m speaking about the biblical definition of typology. Joseph was also a type of Christ.

I believe this is how God still does things. He allows, and even causes us to bottom out. To run out of options. We lose our confidence in ourselves, and in everyone around us, so that we will then turn to him.

Turn to God in Hope. Turn to Christ Jesus.

So the lie is that my life is F’d and there’s nothing that can be done about it!

Here’s the truth> Look and Live! (see below)

In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will

Ephesians 1:11

Consider Paul, in the first chapter of Romans,

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

Romans 1:21-25

Failure to glorify God is the beginning of the trouble. I think the reverse is true. Acknowledging God, glorifying him, putting him back to where he belongs, reverses the equation:

  1. Being thankful to God, for everything even for what hurts
  2. Leads to me glorifying God!
  3. Leads to the opposite of futile thinking.

My Church History professor in Bible College, Dr Ronald Kydd, talked about causation. He mentioned that no single cause can be blamed for historical events, like the reformation for example.

Speaking of blaming…

M Scott Peck in A “Road Less Travelled” lists two kinds of people that are not ended up needing his help: Character Defects and Neurotics. The Character Defects blame others the Neurotics blame themselves. I’m the type that blames myself. Both are lies. My son suffers from the Character Defect variety, and something else. He’s never content with what he has. He’s always moaned about what he doesn’t have, while treating what he DOES HAVE with contempt. Again, it brings to mind the people of Israel on their way from Egypt to the Promised land.

The story of Nebuchadnezzar comes to mind. In Daniel 4, he is taught a lesson about this very thing. He blames himself for his plight. And God showed him a different point of view. I’m joking a bit here, because he was the mightiest ruler of his time! And he took credit for it! Patting himself on the back! Go read the story!

For me it’s easier to give credit to God when things go well beyond anything I could have accomplished on my own. But it’s easier to blame myself or others when things aren’t going well. But both miss the point of it all. But both are a form of human pride. Both are a lie. To God be the glory, forever and ever amen. I won’t go into it, but just in case you think I’m mistaken, take a look at Romans chapter 9.

Today! Live in today! Make the best of today! There’s an olde hymn, Look and live! There’s an event recorded in the olde testament that comes to mind for me here. It’s in Numbers 21:4-9. The Israelites were delivered from Egypt by the mighty hand of God. That story starts in the book of Exodus. It’s hard to read for me! Each time I get to the part about the Israelites groaning and moaning, grumbling against God, it hurts! I want it to be different! “Tell me they didn’t just say that!!!”

…they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!” Numbers 21:5

God had been hearing it over and over again! He got tired of it also! He sent snakes to bite them! They started to die! He got their attention! They went to Moses, and repented! They connected the dots! “We sinned when we spoke against the Lord and against you…” they asked Moses to pray! That’s where they should have gone when they were hungry, thirsty – their needs! He prayed to God, God told him to make a bronze snake, to lift it up, and tell the Israelites anyone bitten by a snake could look and live! Interesting to me that they needed to be bitten, to realize, to listen! To be obedient! Also interesting to me is that there had to be a time lag ! Moses had to design and forge a bronze snake! Add to this that the snakes weren’t removed! Nor were they prevented from biting them! And that God’s solution brought healing!

Listen! Look to God! Live!

The KNOWLEDGE that something is whacked… that’s NOW and TODAY. The book of Hebrews talks about Today.

Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need

Hebrews 4:16

My eyes are open, but what am I seeing ? God’s word brings clarity! It’s the lens I need to understand what’s what! Ephesians 1:11 says that,

In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will,

Ephesians 1:11

So do you see it yet? The lie is the part where you or I, focus our sight on the past. It’s gone.

Today is the day of salvation.

Several authors have pointed out that the same family circumstances bring about very different children, who end up leading very different lives.

A famous quote, is that a poor workman blames his tools. God is the perfect craftsman, and he knows the imperfections and limitations of his tools, you and me parents. And he’s worked that into how he gets it done.

Upholding One Another

Thank you Midwest Bible Church

The photo I’ve used here is one I found while searching online for one that would represent Exodus 17:8-16. I found this one on a BLOG from a church in Chicago… so I’m giving them the credit for the photo, and this link is their message on that same scripture.

Hey! One of our pastors is suffering! I’ve been dealing with this ‘subject’ my whole life it seems. Here are some thoughts on that.

NO Shadow of turning with thee…

James 1:17-18J.B. Phillips New Testament

17-18 But every good endowment that we possess and every complete gift that we have received must come from above, from the Father of all lights, with whom there is never the slightest variation or shadow of inconsistency. By his own wish he made us his own sons through the Word of truth that we might be, so to speak, the first specimens of his new creation

James 1:

17-18 But every good endowment that we possess and every complete gift that we have received must come from above, from the Father of all lights, with whom there is never the slightest variation or shadow of inconsistency. Great Is Thy Faithfulness

Great is Thy faithfulness,” O God my Father, There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be. “Great is Thy faithfulness!” “Great is Thy faithfulness!” Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided— “Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord, unto me!

What is there in that phrase “…there is no shadow of turning with thee” ?

Consistently, unchanging, faithfully, always the same… ever heard of a shadow of a doubt?

New Life

The verses below are a message on my heart today.

I suffer from anxiety, and part of that is regret… God is wants to heal this!

In Exodus beginning in chapter 5, God sends Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh! And tells him, “Let my people GO!

If you read it over… realize that it’s YOU who has the power over your life! There’s an enemy who keeps you in bondage through the lies that he speaks! If we live and walk in the truth, we walk out of Egypt, and into the promise of the Life he has for us!

It’s a journey! It’s about making a decision! To walk in the same direction for a long time, for all time!

Make a decision, speak out his promises! His grace, his mercy! His Love! His plan!

Read these and meditate and pray, ask God to convince you, to be g the enemy down, and to wipe him off your MAP!!

18“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.

19 See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.

20 The wild animals honor me, the jackals and the owls,

because I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen,

21 the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise.

Isaiah 43:

……..

Hebrews 12:22 But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, 23 to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

Genesis 4:10 The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.

…….

Ain’t No Grave

Oh, shame is a prison as cruel as a grave

Shame is a robber and he’s come to take my name

Oh, love is my redeemer

Lifting me up from the ground

Love is the power when my freedom song is found

There ain’t no grave

Gonna hold my body down

There ain’t no grave

Gonna hold my body down

When I hear that trumpet sound

I’m gonna rise up outta the ground

There ain’t no grave

Gonna hold my body down

Oh, oh oh oh oh oh oh

Oh, oh oh oh oh oh oh

Oh, fear is a liar with a smooth and velvet tongue

Fear is a tyrant

He’s always telling me to run

Oh, love is a resurrection and love is a trumpet sound

Love is my weapon

I’m gonna take my giants down

There ain’t no grave

Gonna hold my body down

There ain’t no grave

Gonna hold my body down

And when I hear that trumpet sound

I’m gonna rise up outta the ground

There ain’t no grave

Gonna hold my body down

Oh, there was a battle

A war between death and life

And there on a tree

The Lamb of God was crucified

And He went on down to hell

He took back every key

He rose up as a lion and He set all captives free

There ain’t no grave

Could hold His body down

There ain’t no grave

Could hold His body down

When He heard the trumpet sound

He rose up outta the ground

There ain’t no grave

Could hold His body down

There ain’t no grave

Could hold His body down

There ain’t no grave

Could hold my body down

There ain’t no grave

Could hold my body down

Oh, if you walked out of the grave, I’m walking too

If you walked out of the grave, I’m walking too

If you walked out of the grave, I’m walking too

If you walked out of the grave, I’m walking too

If you walked out of the grave, I’m walking too

If you walked out of the grave, I’m walking too

Gonna sing about it, yeah

If you walked out of the grave, I’m walking too

I’m gonna meet Jesus

If you walked out of the grave, I’m walking too

Oh, if you walked out of the grave, I’m walking too

If you walked out of the grave, I’m walking too

If you walked out of the grave, I’m walking too

If you walked out of the grave, I’m walking too

There ain’t no grave

Gonna hold my body down

There ain’t no grave

Gonna hold my body down

And when I hear that trumpet sound

I’m gonna rise up outta the ground

There ain’t no grave

Gonna hold my body down

There ain’t no grave

Gonna hold my body down

There ain’t no grave

Gonna hold my body down

I Choose Life

Freestyle Libre2

On my iPhone now, I have realtime blood glucose reading… anytime I wanna know, it’s there.

It’s a constant reminder to choose life over death, and even quality of life is being chosen!

I’ve seen the effects and outcomes of those who have ignored this proven science.

I choose life.

For my wife, kids, and grandkids.

In the same way… I choose to pursue my spiritual life. I choose eternal life, and I choose to be effective in this life, to make a difference for Jesus… to being as many with me as I can.

Writing out my bible daily helps me in this quest. It’s a daily discipline to keep me meditating on his word.

Dreams

Joseph: “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”

Genesis 37:9

The innocence of a child. He was only 17 years old, and his brothers were grown men.

What did they suppose? Their reaction was recorded, they said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us?” And it says, “His brothers were jealous of him…”

Why didn’t they see that God was speaking?

As I ponder this, I remember what Joseph said to them later, when the dreams came to fruition,

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done…”

Genesis 50:20

As I read this story I wonder at how foolish Joseph was. But in light of his own conclusion about things in verse 20 there, didn’t God know the sons of Jacob? He knew people, and how they’d react! His purpose was accomplished because he is the one who:

…works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will,

Ephesians 1:11

So this points back to one of my favourite scriptures,

For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.

Romans 1:21 NIV

JB Phillips puts it this way:

They knew all the time that there is a God, yet they refused to acknowledge him as such, or to thank him for what he is or does. Thus they became fatuous in their argumentations, and plunged their silly minds still further into the dark.

Romans 1:21 JB Phillips

So in my own life, as I look back, I acknowledge and Glorify God! He’s in control! Always has been and always will be! We are not victims! We are at the mercy of God!

John 1:12-13 NIV also says this…

  • he gave the right to become
  • he gave them the power to become

That tells me about our gift of free choice!

If you believe in God, in Jesus Christ… you also believe in his word! Hebrews 11:6 says He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him!

Matthew 6:33-34 …and all these things will be given to you as well. If you seek first his kingdom and his righteousness…

At this point in my life… I am realizing my part and his part,

Where ever I am successful it is by His plan… and wherever I fail, that also… God is not limited by me, or anyone else… if God is for me, who can be against me, that’s a scripture also! Romans 8:31

Victory

I just started listening to a book, The Deconstruction of Christianity, and am finding myself wanting to rethink books I’ve recommended and to whom.

…For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power and love and a sound mind

2 Timothy 1:5-7 J B Phillips

God preserves and keeps me by his Holy Spirit!

Oh, and that man up there? That’s Dave Hamata, who has passed away now, back in November 2011.

Labyrinth

Glenn, Laurence and Andrew are climbing their way out of a deep cavern, a natural cave Glenn is at the head, foraging slowly feeling his way along… there’s a breeze of air that he’s detected and he’s following it’s distant blowing. Laurence is a little behind him. Andrew is following the sound of their voices, he can’t feel that breeze, nor see the occasional glint of light… but he can hear their voices, and they assure him that they are headed to the way out. He doesn’t hardly believe it’s possible after all this time, but he DOES believe his brothers… he follows their voices, and carries on… humming a YouTube tune

Remember always that you not only have the right to be an individual, you have an obligation to be one.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

Betty White Quote:

“Keep the other person’s well being in mind when you feel an attack of soul- purging truth coming on.”

In regards to:

A bad workman blames his tools –

God uses us – fallen man, as his tools, he accomplishes what needs be done

Enter into His Rest

That’s a fig tree

…for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. Hebrews 4:10

I have a few things in my heart that I rally against… and one of them is

Should

  • An unexamined angst
    • first comes the anxious feeling
    • Next comes our intentional, cognizant search for something to hang that angst on
    • Then comes the part where we incorporate an unchallenged cyst into our lives…

…and everything that does not come from faith is sin. Romans 14:23

I am about 60 years old. Yesterday I wrote about handwashing. Those of you who do not include God in your purview need to be examining WHERE your sense of right/wrong comes from. This means examining your soul! Personally I believe that this is where you will find God. Your preconceived notions of just WHO God is may be a torment to you… you should also know that there is no need to fear the one who created you! Talk to him! Ask him to make himself known to you! In fact, I would truly not be surprised if there have been numerous individuals in your life who have been God’s way of reaching out to you, because that’s how he does things ❤️
