The coach sends Sonny over to drive Ruth to a doctor’s appointment one day, and the seed for seduction is planted. Ruth’s loneliness and emptiness is displayed with causeless tears, Sonny’s innocence is made obvious as well.
A few scenes later we see these two together again. Ruth is running the canteen, and Sonny is standing alone, just outside the pass through window. Ruth asks him to give her a hand, pretty quickly they’re alone outside, dumping the garbage, and they kiss. She hints at more to come with the question, “will you come take me to my doctor’s appointment again next week?”
This develops into a series of encounters, which the whole town learns about through gossip. In the meantime.
Meanwhile there is a young lady in the same classes at school, Jacy. She makes her rounds with the boys, and just as Ruth is redecorating her house to Sonny’s tastes (blue wallpaper, new blue comforter for their bed, Sonny’s favourite colour) Jacy decides to take Sonny for a ride, literally and figuratively.
Jacy strings him along, with offerings of sex just out of reach, before arranging for her parents to end their relationship.
