Fear

John 20:19

I’ve known about this moment for a long time now. And for the longest time now, the part that moved me is how Jesus walked through a locked door. Because it wasn’t Jesus they were hiding from.

As I ponder it, Jesus told them plainly, didn’t he? We see it from our perspective so clearly. In light of whom we know Jesus is. His death and resurrection, his returning to the disciples. It is in our framework of the known things.

But they were at ground zero. They didn’t get it! They didn’t realize that he would give himself up to the Jewish leadership! They didn’t know that he had issued a prayer that none of them would be lost! When they saw him taken away and crucified, all their perceptions shattered!

This is the way it is with us, and our expectations, our paradigm! Things aren’t working out the way we thought nor planned!

So we are like those disciples, locked in a room, watching the door! What we fear is on the other side of that door! We’re safe in here!

Then God steps into our context! He sets us free from that room! That mindset that paradigm!

This is my prayer for Nicholas, that he will emerge from that room, following Christ Jesus. All that he thought he knew is in that room. His sins. His good deeds. His potential. And all that lays ahead is hidden in Christ, to be revealed moment by moment.
