This story is a hybrid of two things:

* my own salvation

* a dream I had as a teenager

Zechariah 3 has particular significance for me.

I was about 18 years old, and recently heart broken. I was standing in an empty parking lot, at night, on the way home from her place for the last time. she’d done me the way I’d done to others!

I didn’t want to live anymore. All the heartbreaks I’d ever caused flooded into me – the guilt came on as lethal empathy – and God moved in my heart to speak me into sanity… He asked me to stay on this side of the stars… to live for him!

Romans 12:1-2 is a picture of that:

We have seen God’s mercy and wisdom: how shall we respond?

With eyes wide open to the mercies of God, I beg you, my brothers, as an act of intelligent worship, to give him your bodies, as a living sacrifice, consecrated to him and acceptable by him. Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mould, but let God re-mould your minds from within, so that you may prove in practice that the plan of God for you is good, meets all his demands and moves towards the goal of true maturity.
