Oughts

Traditions, acceptable behaviour.

THEY are a nameless, faceless mass of everyone yet nobody at the same time.

I cannot go out my front door, and confront anyone about their rules.

On my reading there is reference to the death of external rules. Once upon a time there was the authority of the Holy Bible, and the Pope. When one wanted to know the right thing to do, one just asked the church.

That became eroded, and eventually died.

Protestantism brought along a myriad of alternative rules. One could vote to follow a sect and its rules. But if ever there was a conflict where one just could not accept the rule of that sect, there was and is that choice to leave. Some began their own sect, and followers came along with them. This freedom created a morass of steaming piles of shit.

What we have left is the shoulds and oughts.

In our world today there are no absolutes. No rules to mindlessly fling ourselves upon.

Shoulds and oughts

As soon as I hear myself saying what I should do, or ought to do, I realize that it’s Crap. Comfort leaves me.
