Woe To Assyria

Me and all these other dice bouncing around in the cup

In that day the remnant of Israel,
    the survivors of Jacob,
will no longer rely on him
    who struck them down
but will truly rely on the Lord,
    the Holy One of Israel

Isaiah 10:20

Blessed peace, after the chastening of the Lord!

The notion that we are dice dancing around in a cup, is a confession of our limited understanding and vulnerability. Two verses come to mind. Proverbs 16:33 and Ephesians 1:11. God is not limited! He is in control! To acknowledge his absolute superiority over us is to Glorify him as God, and it’s the beginning of wisdom to do so, and the path that leads to futile thinking not to do so!

A loving God is in control! Leading whosoever will to come to him from out of the storm! Subjecting creation to frustration so that they may turn to him in hope!

Have I been pondering these things? Or has the Holy Spirit himself been talking these things over with me? I’ve been listening closely! I’ve been longing to know, longing to hear!

I think of Judas, the one that betrayed Jesus. I think of Pharaoh whom God raised up so that he might glorify himself in the eyes of Israel and the eyes of the whole world. They are explained to me in Romans 9. God gets to do whatever he wants!

I’m an old man now. And I am at rest. But don’t let that confuse you. I’m not inactive, I’m not like that rich man with the big harvest. Oh God! Can this man that I am, eyes plucked out, my hair is growing back now, is there yet a work that I can do for you!

God is at work!
