The Music

Today I was musing with my nephew trying to describe the exciting developments in my life over the past year, and indeed since about 1997.

I’m 53 and my nephew is 19. For reasons not entirely within my control he has spent most all of those years NOT in my life, and I’m only just now getting to know him, and he – me. I don’t know much about his faith or world view, and he doesn’t know much about mine. I’ve been working with him over the last few months on a project he told us as a family about. As far as I know I am one of the only ones in my family that has sought to know and help him in this quest.

Today he emailed me so’s we could hook-up via a Skype call. He currently lives on the other side of an Ocean from me, you see. He told me of our recent exciting developments. I say our because I feel just as invested as he at this point. I’ve spent lots of time, emails, Skype calls brain storming with him. It was indeed all good news, and promising. That part is his story to tell. He then asked me as our call drew to a close how I’ve been lately. I didn’t want to take a long time in telling him, and my mind went all the way back to 1997 and in case this post doesn’t have an obvious date posted, today is February 29, 2016. I also haven’t spoken with him too much about our world views, his or mine. But my faith, my relationship with God is all about me, is all about who I am, and that’s what has recently born fruit in my life. I ventured to the poetic. Here it is;

My family growing up was religious. And to describe what I mean by that I’d say they liked music. They played records, vinyl records on turn tables with stereophonic . . . and as I grew up I desired to move toward the music source itself. For my life to be the music played. And that has recently been the case for me, and its as wonderful as one could ever hope to describe.

We said our goodbyes, but my mind continued to muse over this picture of my faith. I ask myself as I get near the bottom of the page here,

Am I the instrument? or Am I the musician?

We are the instrument, He is the musician, and our music?

Ephesians 3:10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, 11 according to his eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.

and

2 Corinthians 2:14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere. 15 For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. 16 To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task? 17 Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, as those sent from God.
